New Zealand wants to continue their strong record against the West Indies and start their World Test Championship (WTC) campaign well when the first Test begins at Hagley Oval on Tuesday.
The Black Caps recently beat the West Indies 3–1 in the T20 series and 3–0 in the ODI series in November. Because of this, they feel confident heading into the three Test matches in Christchurch, Wellington, and Tauranga.
New Zealand won the first WTC title in 2021. They know winning at home is very important if they want a chance to reach the 2027 final. Their last WTC campaign was hurt because they lost four out of seven home Tests in 2024.
New coach Rob Walter, leading the Test team for the first time, said that success at home is crucial. He added that while New Zealand can win overseas too, starting strong at home helps set the tone for the rest of the tournament.
The West Indies have struggled lately, losing their last Test series to Australia and India. They have not won a Test in New Zealand since 1995, but they can still surprise teams with moments of individual brilliance.
West Indies captain Roston Chase said he hopes his team can pull off an upset but mainly wants them to continue playing exciting and positive cricket, just as they did in the recent ODIs and T20s. He said the team’s goal is to play good cricket, make New Zealand work hard, and try to put pressure on them early.
For the West Indies, veteran fast bowler Kemar Roach returns to strengthen their bowling attack.
New Zealand’s pace attack looks different this time. Kyle Jamieson has been rested, and Will O’Rourke and Ben Sears are injured. Jacob Duffy and Zak Foulkes, who debuted earlier this year, will join Matt Henry and the recalled Blair Tickner as the main seam bowlers.

Captain Tom Latham said he is excited about the bowling lineup. Even with injuries, he believes the new bowlers have already shown they can perform well at the international level.
